The Angel Inn
STOKE-BY-NAYLAND,
nr Colchester,
CO6 4SA
Set in Constable country, this Grade II listed 16th-century coaching inn is under new ownership and has undergone a full refurbishment. It may offer the most modern of facilities but it has retained plenty of its original features and charm with beamed bars, log fires and cosy snug areas. The relaxed, contemporary feel extends to the air-conditioned conservatory, patio and sun terrace. With its high ceiling and 52-ft deep well, The Well Room is certainly a focal point, and booking for lunch or dinner is recommended. Dining in the bar is on a first-come, first-served basis but the same menu is served throughout. Main courses offer a range of meat, seafood and vegetarian options, typically including pan-fried hake fillet with beetroot fritter, braised chicory and orange beurre blanc, or smoked bacon and cheddar chicken Kiev with tomato salsa and potato wedges. There is an extensive wine list.

Excellent meal and good attentive service. Good selection of wines to accompany meal. Good quality ingredients cooked well and In a modern but non fussy way. Pleasant atmosphere and environment. Recently acquired business where level of trade is increasing rapidly. Consistency in coming months will be key to ensuring this business is back on the map again after a series of failed attempts. With the standards witnessed today I am confident. Watch this space.
