STOKE-BY-NAYLAND, nr Colchester, CO6 4SA
This substantial old inn has served the sublime village of gabled colour-washed houses and tall, slim chimneys since well before local lad John Constable put brush to canvas to capture the beauty of deepest rural Suffolk. Careful modernisation, like the air-conditioned conservatory, patio and sun terrace, harmonise happily with the ancient charm of The Angel's beamed bars, log fires and snug areas. The Well Room restaurant area, with its lofty, timbered ceiling and 52-ft deep well, is an astonishing centrepiece. Modern dishes and robust classics share billing on the seasonally-inspired menu which has gained head chef Mark Allen an AA Rosette. From the à la carte, consider chargrilled swordfish; pan-fried calves' liver and bacon; or warm caramelised onion and goats' cheese tart. There is a choice of grills cooked over oak and chicory on their Big Green Egg. Luxurious accommodation here offers scope for extended exploration of the scenic Stour Valley.
