STOKE BRUERNE, Nr Towcester, NN12 7SB
Trim thatch topping a long, low building of golden limestone makes this canalside pub stand out at the heart of the canal system. The busy locks here, together with the National Canal Museum directly opposite, are reflected in the decor; lots of old photos, paintings and ephemera - one bar is shaped like a narrowboat. Beers from the Marston's stable satisfy the thirst, whilst food can be enjoyed in bars, bistro or elegant restaurant. Traditional pub grub is the foundation of robust bar meals; the carte menu in Woodwards Restaurant includes herb-basted, slow-roasted rump of lamb, or pan-fried sea bass fillet with leeks.
