STOKE BRUERNE, Nr Towcester, NN12 7SB
Trim thatch topping a long, low building of golden limestone makes this canal-side pub stand out at the heart of the canal system. The busy locks here, together with the National Canal Museum directly opposite, are reflected in the decor; lots of old photos, paintings and ephemera - one bar is shaped like a narrowboat. A wide choice of beers will satisfy a thirst, whilst food can be enjoyed in bars, bistro or elegant restaurant. Traditional pub grub is the foundation of robust bar meals; the carte menu in Woodwards Restaurant includes pan-fried trio of fish (salmon, red mullet and sea bass) with balsamic stir-fried vegetables; slow-cooked devilled rump of lamb; and mushroom and tarragon strudel with Madeira sauce.
