The Nursery Inn

Green Lane, Heaton Norris, STOCKPORT, SK4 2NA

Built in 1939 to replace its predecessor, this well-preserved hostelry is down a narrow street of late 19th-century terraced houses. The spacious interior evokes pre-World War II days, with its oak-panelled lounge, former smoke room and other mid 20th-century pub features. Good-value, home-cooked lunchtime snacks (the kitchen is closed in the evening) comprise sandwiches, toasties, jacket potatoes and mains of gammon, egg and chips; beer-battered fish and chips; and rib-eye steak baguette with salad. The pub's bowling green is reached by a passage lined with team trophies. The Hydes real ales in the bar are joined by guests at the three annual beer festivals.
