The Arden Arms

In the centre of Stockport, this Grade II listed late-Georgian coaching inn retains its unspoilt multi-roomed layout and original tiled floors. The building was last modernised in 1908, giving drinkers the opportunity to order from the traditional curved bar before settling down by the coal fire in the tiny snug. Outside, the large cobbled courtyard is used for alfresco dining and summer concerts. The lunch menu has an extensive list of hot and cold sandwiches and daily-changing specials, while a cheese and onion pie or pan-fried lamb chops may be dinner options. There's always a traditional Sunday roast, as well as jazz nights and charity quizzes.
