21 High Street, STOCK, CM4 9BD
This 15th-century free house on Stock's village green is every inch the traditional country pub, offering a warm welcome, authentic pub interiors and a pleasing absence of music and fruit machines. There's an emphasis on food here, with dishes ranging from traditional pie, mash and liquor to pan-fried calves' liver with crispy bacon, creamy mash and home-cooked onion rings. You could finish with treacle tart and ice cream, or citrus bread pudding. The annual beer festival (late May) has been going from strength to strength for over 30 years; you'll have over 100 real ales to choose from, not to mention fruit beers, perries and more.
