12 Saint Pauls St, STAMFORD, PE9 2BE
Named after Tobias Norris, who bought it in 1617 for use as a bell foundry, this splendidly restored and renovated medieval hall house dates back to 1280. Adnams Southwold Bitter and Castle Rock Harvest Pale are permanent fixtures in the wood-floored bar, while guest ales are rotated regularly. Having started maybe with a plate of pigs in blankets with mustard mayonnaise, your main course, from the rather imaginative menu, could be venison Wellington; lime and chilli beef salad; roasted cauliflower, red lentil and coconut curry with rice and honey flatbread; or roasted chicken and leek pie. Stone-baked pizzas are cooked in ovens imported from Italy, their toppings ranging from spicy beef brisket to duck. Puddings include passionfruit cheesecake and spiced apple crumble. A large enclosed patio is ideal on warmer days. Note that, lunchtimes apart, there's a strict over 18s-only policy.
