New Street, SHREWSBURY, SY3 8JQ
Paths from the medieval heart of the town drift through Quarry Park and across a footbridge to this half-timbered retreat beside a great loop of the River Severn at Shrewsbury. Lounge on the huge riverside terrace or make a base in the beamed, rambling, airy interior where real ales from Shropshire's best microbreweries, including Three Tuns and Ludlow Gold should delight the most discerning beer-lover. Dishes from the grill are specialities of the house, using meats with a largely Welsh Marches provenance. Otherwise perhaps start with ham hock and pea terrine with piccalilli purée; or wild mushroom and thyme soup, then tuck into steak and ale pie, sauté curly kale, peas and carrots; and finish with lemon posset and raspberry sorbet.
