The Waggon and Horses

Old Frome Road, Doulting Beacon, SHEPTON MALLET, BA4 4LA

Sitting high in the Mendip Hills with views over Glastonbury is this pretty, whitewashed building with leaded windows. Once a coaching inn in the 18th century, it is now a family-run pub with a large enclosed garden, where drinks and meals can be enjoyed outside in fine weather. A varying range of local real beers and ciders are served alongside traditional home-cooked dishes. You could begin with prawns in filo pastry; or a pot of mushrooms, bacon and cheese, followed by scampi and chips; lasagne; faggots in onion gravy; or chicken breast in a tarragon or mushroom sauce. Baguettes, jacket potatoes, ploughman's and other light bites are available at lunchtime. Children are most welcome, and the building is accessible for wheelchairs. There are regular (motor) bike nights and Italian food every Thursday evening.
