SHELLEY, Huddersfield, HD8 8LR
This old drovers' inn is tucked away in the rolling green countryside of the Pennines, about a 20-minute drive south east of Huddersfield. An ideal stopping off place for travellers heading north to the Yorkshire Dales, the pub has built a reputation for good quality food and a welcoming atmosphere. The spacious interior has a traditional feel with exposed beams and large fireplaces. On summer evenings, sit out on the deck with a pint of Black Sheep (to remind you of the drovers) or a glass of wine and soak up the fabulous views. The food served in both bar and restaurant successfully fuses traditional English with international influences. A typical three-course meal might be Creole-spiced crab gumbo; braised Bolster Moor oxtail; date and sultana pudding with salted caramel sauce and hazelnut ice cream. A wide range of lighter meals is available at lunchtime.
