Cavendish Bridge, SHARDLOW, Nr Derby, DE72 2HL
Up to nine real ales are served at this family-friendly pub on the south side of the River Trent, where there's a beer festival twice a year. Built as a coaching inn during the 17th century, it retains its warm and atmospheric interior. Several hundred water jugs hang from the ceilings, while the walls display an abundance of brewery and railway memorabilia. Food is lovingly prepared by the landlady; main meals focus on pub classics such as home-made steak and kidney pie; ham, eggs and chips; lasagne; curry; steaks; vegetarian dishes, and daily specials. There's also a good choice of baguettes, sandwiches and jackets. Monday night is quiz night; folk music on the first and third Tuesday of every month; curry night on Wednesdays.
