Newfield Inn

Tucked away in the peaceful Duddon Valley, Wordsworth's favourite, is this 16th-century cottage-style pub, now in new hands. Hugely popular with walkers and climbers, the slate-floored bar regularly throngs with parched outdoor types quaffing pints of local ales. Served all day, food is hearty and traditional and uses local farm meats; the choice ranges from hot and cold sandwiches, salads and lunchtime snacks like beer-battered fish and chips, to pie and mash; chicken supreme; Cumberland sausages; and sticky toffee pudding. Retreat to the garden in summer and savour cracking southern fells views, or come for the beer festival in October.
