The Anvil Inn

Main Street, SAWDON, Nr Scarborough, YO13 9DY

There's bags of charm here in what until 1985 was a working forge, its history traceable back to the early 1700s. The bar, with its stone walls and steeply pitched ceiling, was the blacksmith's workshop and the furnace, anvil, bellows and tools are all still in place. Sit on an old pew and enjoy one of the weekly changing Yorkshire beers, such as draught Frothingham Best from the Great Newsome brewery, or a bottle of, ahem, Daleside's Old Leg Over. Locally farmed beef and pork, game from Dalby Forest, and Whitby-landed fresh fish all appear on the bar and dining room menu. Main course choices include slow-braised, Spanish-style shank of lamb with salt-roasted pistachios and creamed potatoes; pan-roasted corn-fed chicken supreme with sautéed garlic mushrooms, wrapped in prosciutto and served with roast butternut squash risotto. Elderflower and rosewater crème brûlée with clotted cream vanilla ice cream and shortcake is a typical pudding.
