Gun Garden, RYE, TN31 7HH
The pretty Ypres Castle Inn, known as 'The Wipers' by the locals, sits beneath the ramparts of the Ypres Castle Tower and has been providing hospitality since 1640. It was once the haunt of local wool smugglers. Now under new management, the inn has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and offers a reading room stocked with an eclectic literary mix and children's games. The bar, featuring the original timber frame of the building, serves local Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter, best enjoyed sitting next to the roaring log fire. From the garden there are magnificent views of Romney Marsh and the River Rother, whose working fishing fleet provides most of the seafood on the menu. Other options include Romney Marsh lamb hotpot and wild boar sausage and mash. Booking is advisable for the traditional Sunday roasts. There is live music on Friday nights, Sundays and in the garden in summer. Dogs are welcome - ask for a free dog treat.
