The Ypres Castle Inn

Gun Garden, RYE, TN31 7HH

The pretty Ypres Castle Inn, known locally as 'The Wipers', sits beneath the castle's ramparts and has been providing hospitality since 1640. Under new ownership, the inn's atmosphere is as relaxed and friendly as ever, and the reading room is still stocked with an eclectic literary mix and children's games. The bar, featuring the original timber frame of the building, serves Larkins and Harvey's, plus Biddenden cider, all to be savoured around the log fire. From the garden there are magnificent views of Romney Marsh and the River Rother; the Rye Bay fishing fleet moors close by. Light bites include baguettes, ciabattas and bruschettas; popular traditional plates include a classic prawn cocktail, and slow-roast belly pork served with roasted garlic mash. Booking is advisable for the traditional Sunday roasts. The pub hosts live music on Friday nights, Sundays and in the garden in summer.
