ROWHOOK, RH12 3PY
A striking, 400-year-old higgledy-piggledy pub with a classic interior of flagstone floor, low beams and blazing fire in the inglenook, The Chequers Inn is run by Master Chef of Great Britain Tim Neal, also the holder of an AA Rosette. The bar offers Harvey's Sussex and Long Man Best Bitter on tap and an impressive wine list to partner the extensive bar menu (ploughman's, ciabattas, fish and chips, sausage and mash), which may also be eaten in the inn's restaurant. Tim delights in using only the best local produce, often sourcing seasonal wild mushrooms and even truffles from the generous woodlands near the hamlet of Rowhook. From the restaurant menu (also served in the bar), begin with Roquefort cheese pannacotta with toasted walnuts and pear chutney, followed perhaps by crispy hake fillet with a tomato, chorizo and butterbean ragu, buttered spinach and crisp potato; or local sirloin steak with fondant potato, spinach, French beans, wild mushroom sauce and foie gras.
