1 Regent Street, ROLVENDEN, TN17 4PB
This handsome, tile-hung village inn dates, in part, back to the 13th century and is located close to the walled garden that inspired Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic tale The Secret Garden. Handy, too, for steam trains of the Kent and East Sussex Railway, there's a welcome focus on local beers and produce, with a heart-warming, pubby menu. Look out for warm chicken and chorizo salad with sun-blushed tomatoes to start, followed by calves' liver and bacon or wild boar sausages with wholegrain mustard mash and tomato confit. There's a lovely beer garden overlooking the village cricket ground.
