The Plough

REDE, Bury St Edmunds, IP29 4BE

Gracing the front lawn of this part-thatched, 16th-century pub is an old plough, its weather-beaten ironwork brushed by a weeping willow. On long-standing landlord Brian Desborough's ever-changing blackboard menu look for diced Highland beef in cream with wholegrain mustard and whisky sauce; minted local venison in chilli sauce with potato and cheese topping; and sea bass fillets in cream with bacon, butterbean and sweetcorn sauce. The bar serves Fuller's, Adnams, Ringwood and Sharp's ales and ten wines by the glass. At 128 metres above sea level, Rede is Suffolk's highest point.
