The King's Head

RAVENSTONEDALE, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4NH

It's hard to believe that this old whitewashed pub was, at one time, closed for three years. There are real fires in the restaurant, where a three-course lunch or evening meal might be wood pigeon breast with celeriac remoulade; braised belly of pork with black pudding potato cake; and sticky toffee pudding. Vegetarians will find dishes such as Cumberland farmhouse cheese and onion soufflé; and wild mushroom and courgette bouché. Three regularly-changing real ales and eight wines by the glass are served in the open-plan bar. Cyclists will appreciate the lock-up facility for their bikes.
