Royal Oak

The Street, POYNINGS, BN45 7AQ

In a pretty South Downs National Park village and close to the remarkable Devil's Dyke, this pub occupies a lovely spot that's handy for glorious downland walks. In summer, the wonderful garden boasts excellent barbecue facilities, serene rural views. Beyond the handsome exterior, the contemporary decor inside is an effortless blend of solid oak floors, old beams hung with hop bines and sumptuous sofas. In the bar, Sussex brewed Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter sits alongside Westons cider and perry, and the accessible wine list includes New and Old World wines with up to 14 by the glass. The menu changes seasonally and is driven by local produce. Gregarious grazers will appreciate the shared fish platter, offering peppered smoked mackerel, prawns, smoked salmon and marinated anchovies with warm ciabatta; then mains could be braised shin of beef, Guinness and wild mushroom pie with horseradish mash; or chargrilled chicken breast with chorizo, herb and mixed bean stew. Booking ahead for meals is advised.
