Shortbridge Road, PILTDOWN, TN22 3XA
Mentioned in Samuel Pepys' diary, The Peacock Inn dates from 1567 and is well known for its food and warm welcome - and it's full of old-world charm, both inside and out. Long Man Best and a guest ale keep beer-lovers happy. For the hungry there are starters such as baked camembert; shredded confit of duck salad; or Sussex smokie - smoked haddock with cream and mustard sauce; followed by steak, Guinness and mushroom pie; or wild mushroom risotto. Leave room for desserts such as tiramisù cheesecake with coffee ice cream, or winter berry brûlée and biscotti. The large rear patio garden is a delightful spot in summer.
