The Trooper Inn

Alton Road, Froxfield, PETERSFIELD, GU32 1BD

It calls itself the Pub on the Hill and, at an elevation of 220 metres, it's entitled to, although it sits in a dip. Allegedly a recruiting centre during the run-up to WWI, it backs on to Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve. Inside are winter log fires, a spacious bar and a charming restaurant with a vaulted ceiling and wooden settles. Hampshire real ales Ballards and Ringwood Best are served in the bar, and the menu offers a wide range of tempting dishes - free-range chicken and pork terrine; smoked salmon and dill pâté ; Saida's Mococcan chicken couscous; squash, butternut and leek stew; and The Trooper's speciality, slow-cooked half shoulder of lamb. Among the desserts are pistachio meringue with Turkish Delight ice cream; and gin and sorbet martini. There's a mid-week set menu too.
