The Old Drum

16 Chapel Street, PETERSFIELD, GU32 3DP

When Petersfield's oldest pub was refurbished they discovered original 16th-century features including a superb beamed ceiling and, of perhaps less pulse-racing potential, a tongue-and-groove 1960s ceiling. The bar where author H G Wells once sat with a pint of mild now serves Dark Star and Bowman Ales along with Orchard Pig and Purbeck Dorset Draft ciders. The food too has moved considerably on from H G's pickled-egg-if-he-was-lucky days to include smoked Scottish salmon tartare, dill mustard sauce and warm blinis; saffron risotto with Williams pears and chargrilled wild mushrooms; grilled fish of the day, Maris Piper chips, crushed petit pois and tartare sauce; and tarte Tatin with vanilla ice cream. The new owners are continuing with a long term refurbishment.
