The Crown

Old Hereford Road, PANTYGELLI, NP7 7HR

Dating from the 16th century, this charming family-run free house in the Black Mountains has fine views of Skirrid, in Welsh Ysgyrid Fawr, known also as Holy Mountain. Walkers and cyclists love it, but it's a genuine community pub too, serving Bass, Rhymney Best, Wye Valley and guest real ales and Gwatkin cider, all ideal before or with Welsh Black rib-eye steak; salmon supreme; or something spicy from far away. Specials are typified by duck breast, courgettes and roasted onion; and baked avocado with blue cheese, fennel and French beans.
