OVINGTON, Alresford, SO24 0RE
On the banks of the River Itchen, in the pretty village of Ovington, this rose-covered pub is tucked down a short track that's part of the historic Pilgrim's Way running from nearby Winchester to Canterbury. Small rooms off the bar are characterised by subdued lighting, dark-painted walls, sturdy tables and chairs, high-backed settles, and trout-fishing and other rustic artefacts. Add the comforting log fire and one of Wadworth's real ales and the result is, well, pub heaven. Under new management since December 2015, the menu takes in boards, salads, sandwiches, small plates and main courses. Asian-style sesame duck and roasted squash salad, honey, soy and ginger dressing might be followed by home-made steak, porcini mushroom and peppercorn pie, buttered mash and seasonal greens. Finish with classic egg custard tart, clotted cream and fruit compôte or a board of British cheeses.
