The pub sign depicts a butterfly in honour of Dame Miriam Rothschild, a renowned entomologist who lived at the banking family's country house here. The little thatched village was built for the estate workers in the 1880's; huddled by the huge green the ironstone buildings are the epitome of rural England - the World Conker Championships are held here. The pub plays its part well, with timeless oak floor and beams, and a collection of butterfly display cases diverting attention from a bar stocking locally brewed beers (two beer festivals a year). The menu mixes speciality pizzas, traditional English and European dishes - smoked pigeon; pork and blueberry terrine; and linguine with marinated artichokes and feta cheese may appear.
