51 Stockport Road, Lydgate, OLDHAM, OL4 4JJ
There's been a pub here since 1788, when its huge cellars were used for brewing. From its hilltop location, Manchester and the Cheshire plain are spread out below, and on a good day even the Welsh Mountains and Snowdonia are visible. Owner Charlie Brierley has blended the period charm of its beams, exposed stonework and open fireplaces with contemporary decor, especially in The Brasserie, where among the cosmopolitan dishes are Whitby crab cocktail with mango, black beans and chilli; pot au feu; grilled lemon sole with brown shrimps and almond butter; and slow-cooked ox cheek with potato butter and kale. The two- and three-course set lunch and early evening menus are good value, as is chef's seven-course Dining Room tasting menu. Sunday's set lunch includes either a roast meat, a fish or a vegetarian dish.
