The Green, NUN MONKTON, YO26 8EW
One of North Yorkshire's renowned village greens fronts this attractive brick-built pub. A duck pond, grazing Highland cattle and England's tallest maypole take the eye here, whilst behind the pub is a tranquil beer garden, fringed by a vegetable and flower garden. The Grade II listed building is around 220 years old and has an airy, contemporary interior and a snug bar where beers brewed in the village take pride of place. Real fires blaze and fresh flowers are dotted here and there; the walls are hung with paintings of the champion Victorian racehorse after which the pub is named. The team of chefs has an uncompromising passion for local sourcing; the result is a thoughtful dining choice including a fixed-price daytime menu and seasonally adjusted evening carte. A starter may be king scallops and chicken wings with cauliflower couscous; mains could be seared mackerel fillet or venison Wellington with braised ox cheek and roasted ceps, finishing with apple crumble.
