The Red Lion

A pretty 17th-century pub with a large garden set on the skew in the middle of the village; experts have deduced from the positioning of its wooden beams and open fireplaces that it was originally two cottages. Experienced publicans Ian Neale and Lisa Lyne have established a good reputation and the pub goes from strength to strength. They have transformed the pub's land into a productive kitchen garden producing seasonal fruit and vegetables for their menus, and their chickens do their part too, laying a surplus of eggs. The tempting modern menus might offer a starter of venison carpaccio, hazelnuts, home-grown Jerusalem artichokes and Brussel sprout leaves; or beetroot- and vodka-cured salmon, pickled beetroot, horseradish and rye bread crisps. Following on could be Densham's Cumberland sausages, potato rösti, veg and onion gravy; gilt-head bream fillet, parsnip panisse, parsnip purée, girolle mushrooms and watercress; or a pub classic - devilled lamb's liver, mash, seasonal veg and mustard sauce.
