Ferry Lane, NORTH FAMBRIDGE, Chelmsford, CM3 6LR
Believed to have been an inn for at least 200 years, the 500-year-old weatherboarded building was originally three fishermen's cottages. Known locally as the FBI, the pub sits beside a yacht haven on the River Crouch. Low beams and winter fires characterise the bars where pints of Greene King, Mighty Oak Maldon Gold and Sharp's Doom Bar are pulled. Food follows pub grub lines but is home-cooked and good value; look out for specials served all day, deals for OAPs, steaks on Tuesdays and curries on Thursdays. Next door is the 600-acre Essex Wildlife Trust nature reserve, a winter feeding ground for flocks of Brent geese.
