The Packhorse Inn

Bridge Street, Moulton, NEWMARKET, CB8 8SP

Those who seek out dining establishments with top notch food should head here, one of Suffolk's most highly acclaimed. Former banker and founder of Chestnut Inns, Philip Turner owns it, having reopened it following a six-month renovation and changing its name from the Kings Head in homage to the adjacent medieval, pedestrian-only bridge across the River Kennet. Just two miles from Newmarket Racecourse, this smart, family-friendly country pub and restaurant attracts all - locals, out-of-town race-goers and everyone in between - to its large dining and bar area and individually designed, en suite bedrooms. The emphasis is on quality, locally sourced food and drink, including game from shoots, lamb from Moulton, beers from Woodforde's and guest breweries, and Harry Sparrow cider from the Suffolk village of Aspall. Fish has to travel a little further of course, but mainly fish from British waters are sought. The concise but appealing, regularly changing menus might start with cauliflower velouté, grilled mackerel and apple; truffled goats' cheese, pear, hazelnut and beetroot salad; or maybe breast of pigeon, confit leg, beetroot and radish. Among the mains might be fillet of stone bass, braised chicory, razor clams and carrot; loin of Suffolk venison, boulangère potato, parsnip, broccoli and blackberries (for two to share); butternut squash cannelloni and chestnut; and breast of Suffolk chicken, white beans, mushrooms and pancetta. Finish with vanilla rice pudding, roasted hazelnut and pear; or blackberry cheesecake, apple sorbet and honey granola.
