Anchor Inn

26 Court Street, NAYLAND, Colchester, CO6 4JL

The inn, which enjoys a placid setting beside the alder-fringed meadows of the River Stour, is reputedly the last remaining place from which press-gangs recruited their 'volunteers' in this area. Today's customers can rest easy here, recovering from strolls around the idyllic village, which is close to the heart of 'Constable Country'. Having undergone a comprehensive yet sensitive refurbishment, the Anchor is a light, airy destination where local and regional ales change monthly (there are also twice-yearly beer festivals), with the riverside decking and garden the ideal spot to tarry a while. Head chef Ross Armstead presides over a progressive menu of pub favourites and modern European dishes, so anticipate fish and chips or beefburger in brioche; or have a go at roast chicken breast with celeriac purée, new potatoes and baby carrots; or slow cooked pork belly with potato fondant, apple purée, three way crackling and red wine jus. The inn has a smokehouse, and meals on the à la carte menu often reflect this.
