Main Street, MOWSLEY, LE17 6NT
Tucked away in the countryside, this pub has been in the same hands for over a decade during which time it has been very well looked after. Were they to return, the former residents of this well-proportioned Edwardian house would surely be amazed by the transformation of their home into such an appealing community local. The bar has high-backed settles, a flagstone floor and large wood-burning stove. Look up to see not only a fine wood-panelled ceiling but also, not quite where you'd expect it, the wine cellar. The dining area overlooking the garden offers dishes using the best of British seasonal produce, with a strong emphasis on local game: duck liver pāté and plum chutney or seared wood pigeon breast wrapped in bacon with black pudding are typical starters. Follow with roast leg of lamb with apricot and rosemary stuffing, or smoked salmon and dill fish cakes with aļoli mayonnaise.
