The Vine Tree used to be a mill, and workers apparently passed beverages out through front windows to passing carriages - an early drive-through it would seem. These days, it is well worth seeking out for its interesting modern pub food and memorable outdoor summer dining. In the central bar a large open fireplace burns wood all winter, and there's a wealth of old beams, flagstone and oak floors. Ramblers and cyclists exploring Wiltshire's charms are frequent visitors, and the inn is situated on the official county cycle route. Cooking is modern British in style, with menus changing daily in response to local produce availability. Dishes include salads, light bites and vegetarian options, local game and well-sourced fish and meats. Perhaps start with skewer of Moroccan chargrilled boned quail with minted couscous and tzatziki; followed by pan-fried wild sea bass from Looe, rustic ratatouille and cannellini beans. There are also great real ales and a terrific stock of wines, with 40 by the glass. In addition to the suntrap terrace, there's a 2-acre garden with two boules pitches.
