This classy bar and restaurant with rooms is situated on the Earl of Plymouth's estate. Built as a farmhouse in the 18th century, it was home to Robert Clive, who laid the foundation of British rule in India. It was converted into a public house in the late 1900s to cater to the workers on the estate. Inside the handsome Georgian building, traditional and contemporary looks blend well. The bar is bright and modern; here local real ales and ciders are dispensed, along with light snacks. Relax on the sofas by an enormous fireplace in the 18th-century lounge with its beams and brick and stone walls - Clive's original coat of arms is on one wall. A more contemporary upper area leads to a sheltered non-smoking courtyard with tables and parasols for the warmer months. Expect high quality cuisine built around the best of local and seasonal produce: a starter of rillette of duck, truffle butter, herb salad, spiced gingerbread and hazelnut dressing says it all. Accommodation is available in the tastefully converted period outbuildings.
