LOWER SLAUGHTER, GL54 2HS
Formerly Washbourne Court, and once a crammer school for Eton, this handsome inn stands close to the River Lye, soon to join the Windrush and eventually the Thames. Well positioned for exploring the Cotswolds, Bourton-on-the-Water is within walking distance and Cheltenham is only a 30-minute drive away. The spacious beamed bar and stone mullioned windows are a good example of how to successfully balance the appealing qualities of a 17th-century building with the demands of the 21st century. Two AA Rosettes signify that good food is paramount, from sandwiches and light bites to the chargrilled Hereford flat iron steak with watercress and fries. In between might come pan-fried sea bream, spiced lentils, shrimps, cauliflower and coriander dressing; roast duck, spiced carrot purée, turnip and confit leg pastilla. A final flourish might be baked pear clafoutis with caramel ice cream.
