The Baskerville
Station Road,
LOWER SHIPLAKE,
Henley-on-Thames,
RG9 3NY
Behind its rather plain exterior lies a pub of real quality on the popular Thames Path, close to Shiplake station and just a few minutes from historic Henley-on-Thames. Brick-built on the outside, modern-rustic within, it boasts an attractive garden where summer Sunday barbecues are a common fixture plus comfortable accommodation. Walkers remove their muddy boots at the door before heading to the bar adorned with sporting memorabilia, where pints of Loddon Hoppit, brewed two miles away, are served with welcoming smiles. Variety and choice for the customer is a top priority here, as witnessed by award-winning menus covering breakfast, lunch, evening, Sunday lunch and children's choices; a bar snacks blackboard menu proffers buck rarebit, crispy Cornish Brie and cajun fried whitebait. The objective is to serve really good food at a reasonable price in a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere. Modern British describes the kitchen's approach, with continental and eastern influences. All produce is delivered daily, and all dishes, including the bread, are prepared on the premises; organic, sustainably sourced ingredients travel as few miles as possible, and a special fish menu runs throughout the summer months. Lunchtime open sandwiches include smoked English bacon grilled with Cornish Brie . Alternatively you could savour spring lamb Barnsley chop with black pudding and thyme hash, Puy lentils and whole grain mustard sauce, and English spinach and minted peas. A typical evening choice could start with pan-fried Cornish scallops with tiger prawns, minted cucumber and radish salad, and Pimms and lemon vinaigrette, followed by pan-fried sea bass fillets glazed with smoked harissa and oven-dried tomato and olive cous cous. The wine list extends to 50 bins, and owner Allan Hannah betrays his origins with his range of 40 malt whiskies.

This is our local gastropub and we have been using it regularly for at least five years. The food is varied with a good mixture of specials with popular regulars. It has a good and reasonable wine list - although for regulars more frequent changes to the glass wines would be appreciated. The staff are excellent, friendly and helpful. Nothing pretentious but also not boring. To be recommended.

Comfortable well apponted rooms, a friendly welcome and good service. The restaurant in particular is an undiscovered delight - we were truly amazed! Gourmet cuisine and fine wines meet country inn. We can seriously recommend this establishment and will definitely be returning soon.

This is a hidden gem. Just a few minutes walk from the river Thames, its a traditional pub that does excellent food.
It offers everything from fantastic Sunday lunches to great summer BBQ and has a fantastic selection of wines.
We ate their last sunday and as always the roast pork was outstanding.
The service is always great too, with the staff creating a warm relaxing atmosphere.
This place is really worth checking out.
