108 Fetter Lane, Holborn, LONDON, EC4A 1ES
This exquisitely fitted-out City pub comprises a traditional ground-floor bar, a galleried mezzanine, and a first-floor dining room. For its cosmopolitan selection of bottled beers and lagers, Adnams on tap, Addlestones cider and a dozen wines by the glass, it has to be the bar, of course, whose cream-coloured walls provide the backdrop for leather-covered stools and assorted tables, chairs and banquettes. Modern British dishes here include spiced goat Scotch egg with mint yogurt; and pie of the day, mash greens and gravy. Upstairs is the beautifully restored dining room with mirrored ceiling and linen-clad tables, where the day's choices might include pan-fried monkfish cheeks, octopus, cauliflower and chia seed couscous (fish comes in daily from Billingsgate); crisp veal sweetbreads, bubble-and-squeak, girolles and Madeira jus; or 45-day aged Cumbrian Shorthorn steaks with triple cooked chips. Finish with banana and rosemary soufflé with chocolate ice cream. Please note, the pub is closed at weekends.
