Transformed from the old Mucky Duck pub, this is now a handsome, traditional city watering hole. Downstairs is the wood-panelled bar which serves a cosmopolitan selection of beers and lagers, and 22 wines by the glass. Its fresh cream coloured walls embrace leather-covered bar stools and mixed wooden tables, chairs and banquettes; beneath your feet the reclaimed timber floorboards complete the sumptuous atmosphere. Upstairs on the mezzanine is a beautifully restored dining room with mirrored ceiling and linen-clad tables. Cooking is modern British in style: a baby leek vinaigrette with grated egg and anchovy dressing is a sample starter. Fish fresh from Billingsgate each morning appears in main courses such as roast fillet of Atlantic halibut with leeks, mussels and crème fraîche. An alternative is rump of Scottish Blackface mutton with hedgehog mushrooms and fondant potatoes. To finish, the passionfruit cheesecake, apple and blackberry crumble, and home-made ice creams are all excellent.
