The White Swan

In the heart of the City, this handsome pub - formerly the old Mucky Duck - is spread across three floors, housing a traditional ground floor bar plus mezzanine and first-floor dining room. In the wood-panelled bar, enjoy a cosmopolitan selection of beers and lagers, and plenty of wines by the glass. Its fresh cream-coloured walls embrace leather-covered bar stools and mixed wooden tables, chairs and banquettes; beneath your feet there are reclaimed timber floorboards. Upstairs is the beautifully restored dining room with mirrored ceiling and linen-clad tables. Cooking is modern British in style: king scallop and Jersey Royal ceviche with hazelnuts is a sample springtime starter. Fish from Billingsgate each morning appears in mains such as cod, razor clams, leek and mousseron mushroom, sea shore vegetable dressing. An alternative is Herdwick lamb rump with minted broad beans, potato croquettes and shallot purée. To finish, the rhubarb pie and custard is excellent.
