The Seven Stars

53 Carey Street, LONDON, WC2A 2JB

The Seven Stars may never have seen better days in its 415 years of existence. Since Roxy Beaujolais took over this Grade II listed pub behind the Royal Courts of Justice 17 years ago, delicate and undisruptive primping has produced nothing but accolades. Look out for the mullioned glass dumbwaiter, designed by Roxy's architect husband, that looks tactfully historic, and the cat, named Ray Brown, who wears a ruff just as his predecessor did. Strengthened by its personalities and ambience, The Seven Stars is considered the ideal pub - the food is simple but well executed, the ales are kept perfectly, the wines are few but very good, and the staff are welcoming and efficient. Roxy cooks most of the time here. The day's dishes, listed on the blackboard, change according to what's best in the market and what tickles Roxy's fancy. Examples are cured herring and potato salad; chicken liver pâté; goose rillettes; linguine with chorizo and crayfish; oxtail and mash; chicken and potato pie; and braised beef ribs.
