45 Hollywood Road, LONDON, SW10 9HX
Deep in Chelsea, this mid 17th-century building was once the home of the Middletons, owners of land in England, Barbados and America's Deep South. To one side, a gated archway leads to a small mews where horses were once stabled. The elegant interior was a runner-up in the prestigious Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, in part for the splendid first-floor Blanchard Room, named after a balloonist who in 1784 ascended from the grounds of the house and landed in Romsey. The ground-floor bar serves Meantime's London-brewed real ales and rather special wines released by Young's brewery (to obtain, discreetly ask a member of staff). Spiced parsnip and apple soup with sourdough toast is a possible starter, with 'posh' chicken Kiev, champ, autumn greens and smoked bacon; or market fish of the day to follow. Finish with sticky toffee pudding and Meantime London Stout-flavoured ice cream. Please note, no children after 7pm.
