260-262 Merton Road, Southfields, LONDON, SW18 5JL
A forecourt enclosed by a brick walls distances this grand Edwardian gastro-pub from the street. It's a popular drinking and dining venue, especially during 'Wimbledon Fortnight', but that still leaves 50 other weeks for its attractions to work their magic. The log fires and polished wood furnishings make their contribution, of course, but for many it's the Sambrook's Wandle, Otter Amber and other real ales and ciders, and then there's South London's very own Merton Mule, a cocktail of vodka, ginger beer, ginger ale and crushed lime. Another big draw is the daily-changing menu on which everything is home made, including the bread. Start with lamb, mint and potato croquettes and yogurt and cucumber; and for a main course, roast skate wing with buttered new potatoes, tenderstem broccoli and salsa verde. Finish with a plate of Époisses, Stilton, Brillat-Savarin and other cheeses with toast and apple chutney.
