260-262 Merton Road, Southfields, LONDON, SW18 5JL
This grand Edwardian pub is a popular drinking and dining venue, especially during 'Wimbledon Fortnight', but that still leaves 50 other weeks for its attractions to work their magic. The log fires and polished wood furnishings make their contribution, but for many it's the great choice of refreshments - real ales and lagers including Belleville Amber and Meantime London Lager, ciders and global wines, of course, but not forgetting the Merton Mule, a cocktail of vodka, ginger beer, ginger ale and crushed lime. Another big draw is the daily-changing menu on which everything is home made, including the bread. Start with pork rillette, celeriac remoulade, cornichons and toast. For a main course, poached sea trout, smoked garlic and pea purée and Jersey Royals makes an enjoyable spring treat. Finish with buttermilk pudding, poached Yorkshire rhubarb, or dark chocolate and hazelnut terrine with crème fraîche.
