260-262 Merton Road, Southfields, LONDON, SW18 5JL
A forecourt enclosed by a brick wall distances this grand Edwardian gastro-pub from the street. It's a popular drinking and dining venue, especially during 'Wimbledon Fortnight', but that still leaves 50 other weeks for its attractions to work their magic. The log fires and polished wood furnishings make their contribution, but for many it's the great choice of refreshments - real ales, ciders and world wines, of course, but not forgetting South London's very own Merton Mule, a cocktail of vodka, ginger beer, ginger ale and crushed lime. Another big draw is the short but daily-changing menu on which everything is home made, including the bread. Start with ham hock and parsley terrine with piccalilli and toast. For a main course, a plate of braised ox cheeks, parsnip mash and root vegetables makes a warming winter treat. Finish with Yorkshire rhubarb mess, or sticky ginger pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream.
