99-101 Bermondsey Street, LONDON, SE1 3XB
No doubt this green-tiled, street-corner pub was once a popular local for generations of workers at the Surrey Docks. The docks are no more, Bermondsey has gone up-market, and The Garrison, too, has moved with the times and has new owners. The pub's 21st-century restyling comprises an idiosyncratic mix of decorative themes and antique knick-knacks. The place pulsates from breakfast through to the evening. Start the day with avocado on sourdough toast, porridge, or pancakes. At lunch there are 'small plates' - pumpkin, goats' curd and radicchio salad, say, or larger dishes like lentil, apple and walnut Wellington. Desserts may include baked ricotta cheesecake or Bramley apple and blackberry crumble. In the evening check out the smoked haddock and leek brandade with croûton soldiers; followed by seared hake with curried celeriac, Swiss chard, crab bisque and lemon pickle. Menus change every couple of months; ales rotate more frequently.
