99-101 Bermondsey Street, LONDON, SE1 3XB
No doubt this green-tiled, street-corner pub was once a popular local for generations of Surrey Docks stevedores. The docks are no more, Bermondsey has gone up-market, and The Garrison has moved with the times too. The pub's 21st-century restyling comprises an idiosyncratic mix of decorative themes and antique knick-knacks. The place pulsates from breakfast through to the evening. Start the day with a bowl of porridge or an Orkney streaky bacon butty, or both. At lunch there are entrées, and grills such as roasted duck breast with duck fat potatoes, Savoy cabbage, orange and red wine jus. Desserts may include sticky black treacle pudding with ginger ice cream and coffee sauce. In the evening check out the grilled ox tongue with green beans, radish and tartare vinaigrette; followed by confit pork belly with leek and black pudding mash and baby root vegetables. Menus change every couple of months; ales rotate more frequently.
