Old Dr Butler's Head

Mason's Avenue, Coleman Street, Moorgate, LONDON, EC2V 5BT

The sign says Dr, the fascia says Doctor. Butler was King James I's Court Physician with a line in dodgy cures, including plunging plague victims into cold water. He also sold 'medicinal ale' through his alehouses, this Shepherd Neame pub, rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666, being the sole survivor. Sandwiches are served in the gas-lit bar, while the upstairs Chop House restaurant offers lunchtime favourites such as steak and kidney suet pudding, and an extensive wine list. Like many City of London pubs, Dr Butler's closes at weekends.
