Mason's Avenue, Coleman Street, Moorgate, LONDON, EC2V 5BT
Physician to James I, Butler was actually an old fraud whose home-brewed medicinal ale could only be sold at inns displaying his portrait on their sign. Although the pub is old, the wooden façade is probably Victorian and certainly older than the mock-Tudor buildings opposite. A Shepherd Neame house, it stocks their real ales in the bar, where you can tuck into steak and kidney suet pudding. Restaurant dishes include ale-battered cod and chips; 10oz mature rump steak; pan-fried calves' liver; and sausages and mash. Please note that, like some other City pubs, the ODBH closes at weekends.
