Dr Butler was Court Physician to King James I; his sometimes questionable cures included a 'medicinal ale', sold through his chain of alehouses of which this is the sole survivor, rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666. Sandwiches are served in the Dickensian dark-panelled, gas-lit bar, while upstairs, the Chop House restaurant offers a lunchtime menu featuring favourites such as steak and kidney suet pudding, complementing the Shepherd Neame real ales and an extensive wine list. In common with many City pubs, Dr Butler's is closed at weekends but the bar is now open for dinner from 6-9pm during the week.
