The Woodlands Tavern Country Pub & Dining

Below Gray Hill, near the Roman fortress town of Caerwent, this friendly pub is popular with walkers, cyclists and fishermen. They like it, not just because it's close to the Wentwood Forest and plentiful rivers, but also because it has a good selection of Welsh real ales, such as Wye Valley, Felinfoel and regularly changing guests. In addition, there's the food, with baguettes, all-day breakfasts, jacket potatoes and sausage and mash in the bar, and a menu inviting you to try baked mushrooms with goats' cheese and red onion marmalade; hake fillet with roast cherry tomatoes and pesto; or calves' liver with smoked bacon, creamy mash and red wine sauce. Sunday roasts are always well received, especially out on the patio.
