LLANTRISANT, Usk, NP15 1LE
In the 17th century a typical Welsh longhouse, then from 1845 an inn, the family-owned Greyhound stands just outside the town between the Rivers Usk and Wye. Free-house status ensures a range of real ales and ciders in the log-fire-warmed Stable Bar, where the tiled floor remains steadfastly impervious to muddy boots and soggy dogs. You can play darts, crib and dominoes here or just watch them being played. Owner Nick Davies heads the kitchen team, whose skills you can enjoy in the candlelit restaurant, or in one of three other dining areas. Among the starters are garlic mushrooms; farmhouse pâté and hot toast; and prawn cocktail, while an idea of the main courses is conveyed by liver and bacon with fried onions; grilled local trout with a choice of chips, jacket potato, mash or salad; and Brazil nut and spinach roast with coconut korma sauce. Outside are two acres of lovingly-nurtured, award-winning gardens and a large paddock.
