Hole in the Wall

2 High Street, LITTLE WILBRAHAM, Cambridge, CB21 5JY

The name of this 16th-century village pub and restaurant between Cambridge and Newmarket comes from the days when farm workers used to collect their jugs of beer through a hole in the wall so as not to upset the gentry in the bar. Customers nowadays can enjoy ales from the Milton Brewery and the Indian Summer Brewing Company. The heavily-timbered pub is owned by former BBC MasterChef finalist Alex Rushmer, and first-class modern British cooking is prepared from fresh local produce. You could explore the five or seven course tasting menus with or without a matched wine flight, or stick to the set menu, with choices like pork rillet, dill pickle and black treacle toast; onion and cider soup, nigella seed dressing; parsley and roasted garlic risotto, mushrooms and watercress; or beer-battered cod, triple cooked chips and peas. Finish with spiced chocolate brownie, burnt white chocolate and cornflake ice cream.
