Between the castle and the cathedral in the upper part of the medieval city, the Wig & Mitre is a mix of architectural styles from the 14th century onwards. Owned and operated by the same family since 1977, it's a music-free zone: instead you'll find a reading room and, since it's not tied to a brewery, real ales from Batemans, Black Sheep and Wells & Young's. Food includes full and small English breakfasts served until noon, all-day hot and cold sandwiches, ploughman's and light meals. Turning to the main menu, you might start with tomato and oxtail soup with potato dumplings; then salt hake with clams, creamed garlic, white beans, lardons and samphire; or chicken breast wrapped in pancetta with sage roast potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli and smoked tomato and herb sauce. Under 'puds' the menu lists sticky toffee pudding, and baked rice pudding with bitter chocolate praline.
