Standing on the Pilgrim Way in the heart of medieval Lincoln, the Wig & Mitre is a mix of the 14th and 16th centuries with some more recent additions. It's a reassuringly civilised free house that has been owned and operated by the same family since 1977. There's never any music, but you will find a reading room, and real ales like Batemans XB and Young's London Gold are on tap. Food includes a comprehensive breakfast menu served until noon. Hot and cold sandwiches are amongst the lighter options, which also include a plate of Scottish smoked salmon with lemon. Daily specials might begin with home-made corned beef with piccalilli and boiled egg, followed by mackerel fillets with sweet potato and chorizo salad and lime crushed peas. Round things off, perhaps, with dark chocolate torte and carrot sorbet.
