Market Place, LEYBURN, DL8 5AT
The ivy-clad Sandpiper may only have been a pub for 30 years or so, but it's Leyburn's oldest building, dating to the 17th century. Run by Jonathan and Janine Harrison, the bar and snug offer real ales from a small army of Yorkshire breweries, and some 100 single malts. The restaurant, distinguished by a huge stone lintel above an open fireplace, oak floors and candlelit tables, is where Jonathan has built on his excellent reputation for modern British food. Such reputations, of course, require using the finest ingredients, which he does for traditional and international dishes such as pigeon with spinach risotto; tempura fried squid and vegetables with Thai dressing; grilled red mullet with lobster and tiger prawn tagliatelle; and chump of Waterford lamb, dauphinoise potato and roasted vegetables. For dessert, why not one of the Sandpiper's own ice creams or sorbets, or banoffee pie, glazed bananas and shaved chocolate? Daily special, small plates and sandwiches add to the choices.
