Chris Coubrough's thriving Norfolk-based Flying Kiwi Inns snapped up this rather grand, manor-like building on the edge of upmarket Holt in 2009 and revamped it in impressive style. Expect an elegant, rustic-chic feel throughout the rambling dining areas that radiate from the central bar, with rugs on terracotta tiles, squashy sofas and leather chairs fronting blazing winter log fires, fat tables lamps, feature bookcases, warm heritage hues, and an eclectic mix of old dining tables. The atmosphere is informal, the beer is East Anglian-brewed - try a pint of Adnams - and the food modern British and prepared from top-notch ingredients supplied by the pub's own herd of Dexter cows, local farmers, fisherman and artisan producers. This translates to ham hock, pistachio and mustard terrine with piccalilli; Norfolk duck cassoulet; sea bass with shellfish bouillabaisse, saffron potatoes and garlic rouille; and vanilla pannacotta with rhubarb. This award-winning gastro-pub has superb alfresco areas including an excellent children's garden and a gravelled front terrace with posh benches and brollies.
