The Kings Head (The Low House)

Gorams Mill Lane, LAXFIELD, IP13 8DW

This unspoilt thatched 16th-century alehouse is a rare Suffolk gem that oozes charm and character. Locals know it as the Low House because it lies in a dip below the churchyard. Tip-top ales are served straight from the cask in the original taproom - this is one of the few pubs in Britain without a bar. Now run by Paul Rous and David Newstead, the home-made approach to food continues. Typical dishes are roast black pudding with a soft poached egg; and panko-crumbed white crab and black tiger prawn fishcakes to start, followed by pan-fried skate wing, burnt caper and parsley butter with hand-cut chips; or grilled Cumberland sausages, bubble-and-squeak and caramelised onion gravy. Beer festivals in May and September are unforgettable occasions thanks to the beautiful situation of the pub overlooking the river; its grounds, with rose gardens and an arbour, were formerly the village bowling green.
