Old Warwick Road, LAPWORTH, B94 6JU
Precision-cut logs and soft modern furnishings meet the eye in this convivial, 16th-century former coaching inn beside the Grand Union Canal. Beyond its smart interior is an attractive garden, on cooler days under a canopied patio with heaters. Free-house status means a good choice of real ales in the shape of Purity Pure UBU, Sharp's Doom Bar and Wye Valley HPA. But for many the draw is the brasserie-style food, and there's lots to choose from. For example, the first course could be Thai chicken patties with papaya salad, miso aïoli and black pepper crackers; mains include chargrilled 28-day-matured Hereford rib-eye steak with roast tomato, crispy onions, skin-on chips and béarnaise sauce; and South Indian spiced spit chicken with sweet potato and coconut curry with saffron and cashew pilaf. Children and well-behaved dogs are welcome.
