The George

3 Saint John's Street, KESWICK, CA12 5AZ

Keswick's oldest coaching inn is a handsome 17th-century building in the heart of this popular Lakeland town. Restored to its former glory, retaining its traditional black panelling, Elizabethan beams, ancient settles and log fires, it makes a comfortable base from which to explore the fells and lakes. Expect to find local Jennings ales on tap and classic pub food prepared from local ingredients. Typical dishes include brie and almond wedges or haggis fritters with creamy whisky sauce to start; then there could be main dishes such as pumpkin and red onion tagine; local pheasant breast stuffed with Cumberland sausage and wrapped in bacon; or caramelised duck breast on potato rösti, or Mediterranean vegetable and goats' cheese lasagne. There are 12 comfortable bedrooms available.
